An interesting garlic phenomenon with a medical scientific background which aroused much discussion is the "case of the black spotted dolls" In 1986 Harris reported a case of a patient who made imitations of antique porcelain dolls. Upon firing, they had reacted with the iron contained in the porcelain clay, forming black iron sulphide hence the black spots! This unusual condition is probably based on a rare metabolic disorder. It was shown that the patient had only a limited capacity to degrade sulphur compounds via sulphoxidation and to eliminate them through the urine. To understand the possible biochemical mechanisms contributing to the protective effects of allylsulfides, we investigated the ability of these compounds to undergo enzyme-catalyzed transformations. In addition to catalyzing g-elimination reactions, g-cystathionase can perform b-elimination reactions with cysteinyl S-conjugates derived from garlic extracts when the S-alkyl group R ; is larger than ethyl. Thus, b-elimination reactions with cysteine S-conjugates in garlic may modify cancer-cell growth by targeting redox-sensitive signal proteins at sulfhydryl sites, thereby regulating cell proliferation and or apoptotic responses. These interactions may be useful in identifying efficacy of garlic-derived compounds and or developing other novel organosulfur compounds that may modify intracellular redox potentials or interact with thiols associated within cysteine domains in regulatory, catalytic, signal, or structural proteins. A simple behaviour that can be simulated with this network is a competition of two neurons receiving two different stimuli trains. Both stimuli were modeled as poisson spike trains with a set mean firing rate. The two stimuli trains were set such that one had an average firing rate that was four times bigger than the other. In the simplest case, all local synaptic connections were set to zero and the output activity of the neurons simply reflected the input which they received, as expected. Next, lateral excitatory connections between first neighbours were activated. The lateral excitation is a global parameter, and was set to a low value that allowed the excitability of only limited neighbourhood of the stimulated neurons. In this case, the neuron receiving stronger input was able to spread the activity to a larger fraction of its neighbours. In the third experiment, global inhibition was included by activating the excitatory synaptic connections to the inhibitory neuron, and the inhibitory synapse to the excitatory neurons. When the inhibition value is set to a low value, a soft winnertakeall behaviour emerges. The neuron with lower input activity, still showed firing, but at a lower rate than without inhibition. To obtain a hard winnertakeall behaviour, where the neuron that receives the strongest input suppresses the activity of all other neurons, one should increase either the excitatory synaptic weight to the inhibitory neuron, or the inhibitory synaptic weight to the excitatory neurons. Men and women combined showed no significant differences save for an improved total antioxidant capacity at 6 wk 0.01 ; . Hence, no benefit from GO after 11 wk is one plausible conclusion. However, there were significant differences in effect of GO between men and women for HDL cholesterol HDL-C ; P 0.004 ; and total cholesterol TC ; HDL-C P 0.003 ; . Women showed favorable effects in terms of CHD risk factors i.e., increases in HDL-C and reductions in TC HDL-C ; . whereas men had small adverse effects. There was a significant difference in the GO effect for glucose P 0.006 ; , with a reduction seen for men and an increase for women. The gender effects were unexpected and such analyses were not planned in advance. Confirmation of these findings with larger numbers of subjects would have importance for the use of garlic against CHD and for the design of future garlic studies. 7.
