Introduction Tourette Syndrome TS ; or Tourette's Disorder DSM IV ; is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by a changing pattern of motor and vocal tics that begin in childhood. Many individuals with Tourette Syndrome have associated non-tic symptoms such as hyperactivity, distractibility, impulsivity, obsessions and compulsions, anxiety, depression, and anger control. These associated symptoms may occur in patterns of frequency or intensity characteristic of an additional comorbid coexisting ; disorder such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD ; , Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD ; , or Oppositional Defiant Disorder ODD ; . Whether these problems are an integral part of Tourette Disorder or are separate problems is under investigation. They may result in difficulties in school, in the work place and with social adjustment. Frequently these associated problems or comorbid disorders are a source of more distress or impairment to the individual with TS than the tics. Not all patients with tics meet the formal diagnostic criteria for Tourette Syndrome but the tics may still have significant intensity to warrant treatment. Medication Treatment: General Indications Medication treatment can be beneficial in both reducing the tics and the behavioral and emotional problems in the individual with Tourette's Disorder or other tic disorders. When symptoms are mild, treatment may include only support, education and monitoring. For symptoms that produce significant distress or impairment, medication treatment may be indicated. Currently there are a variety of medications available for the treatment of tics and the non-tic symptoms. There is no single medication, which is helpful to all individuals with tics or Tourette Syndrome. Tics are often mild and will frequently at least partially remit in many individuals, particularly as they go through adolescence. Often it is the behavioral and emotional features that cause the most difficulty for the child. Tic symptoms that cause interference in the child's functioning or cause significant distress are targets for medication treatment with the goal of reducing tic severity and frequency. For individuals with mild to moderate tics, specific medications effective for tic reduction include clonidine Catapres ; or guanfacine Tenex ; . For individuals with moderate to severe tics, the newer atypical neuroleptics such as risperidone Risperdal ; or older traditional neuroleptics such as haloperidol Haldol ; may be indicated. The decision to use medication should take into account a variety of factors in addition to tic severity such as the child's age, medical history and past history of response to medication. Typically one medication can be used over period of several months or longer until the tics have abated. For many individuals, the primary symptoms requiring treatment may be behavioral or emotional, such as hyperactivity, impulsivity or obsessions and compulsions. Medications that target the non-tic symptoms such as antiobsessionals selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or.

The atypical antipsychotics are available as tablets, wafers or injections, depending on the form most suitable for the patient. Doses are adjusted according to patient response, and they may take many weeks to titrate. The dosage may also vary according to the symptoms or condition being treated. Photography. On the other hand, Warhol took a much more expansive approach to the interbreeding of painting and photography, with his conception of the latter shading toward photomechanical reproduction and finally into media per se. And he too can be thought of as extrapolating his art out of what he deemed the historically conditioned possibilities embedded in this "mixed-medium." The difference is that Warhol studiously avoided any transformations of mute materials into meaningful pictures, of fleeting events into enduring art. Especially in his first two years of silk-screening on canvas, he separated the two and exhibited them in alternation, mounting canvases bedecked with assembly-line commodities and celebrities alongside other canvases stuttering with repetitions of wreckage and riots and death. Excerpts of spectacle on the one hand, shocking reality on the other, that which only ever exists as pictures next to that which was never meant to be a picture. The capaciousness of photography, its unbiased welcoming of both the commercial and the journalistic, the prepackaged and the raw, Warhol translated as not democracy but utter indifference, not global sensitivity but a blank stare. The surplus of images available to the medium was revealed to be a deficit; not only was photography unable to reconcile harsh reality with the creations of culture, it was blind and impassive to the very distinction. How Warhol updated the Baudelairian equation of art's relation to modern life was to replace art with culture industry fetishes and life with trauma. Only a medium as indifferent as a machine could cope with an irreconcilable whiplashing between the two. The view of photography as just such a machine was canonized within the art world of the early 1980s, supported by art and criticism that figured and theorized photographs as either passive handmaidens to hulking corporate media interests or as utterly raw documents so objectively indexical that they bequeathed to culture only alien skid marks left by an otherwise inaccessible reality. But Tillmans's art doesn't belong to that period. Perhaps because he took up art toward the end of the 1980s, and with a Xerox machine--just as copiers became the favored medium of an emergent do-it-yourself culture of fanzines, club flyers, and protest rally invitations--Tillmans was able to not only acknowledge and assimilate the connections between photography, reproduction and media but also see them as empowering rather than alienating. It is as Tillmans were rehearsing many of Warhol's moves only to reverse their effects and redirect their consequences. Most significantly, Tillmans works through and breaks down Warhol's stark dividing out of the photographed world into spectacle and trauma, the forever new versus the incurably damaged, by reintroducing the excluded middle, the realm of everyday life and common material exchange. The prion diseases, sometimes referred to as the "transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, " include kuru, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker disease of humans as well as scrapie and bovine spongiform encephalopathy of animals. For many years, the prion diseases were thought to be caused by viruses despite intriguing evidence to the contrary. The unique characteristic common to all of these disorders, whether sporadic, dominantly inherited, or acquired by infection, is that they involve the aberrant metabolism of the prion protein PrP ; . In many cases, the cellular prion protein is converted into the scrapie isoform by a posttranslational process that involves a conformational change. Often, the human prion diseases are transmissible to experimental animals and all of the inherited prion diseases segregate with PrP gene mutations. Publication Types: Review Review, Academic.

He Roman philosopher Horace once said, "Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant." Faye Ross, co-owner of Honolulu Stained Glass Studio & Accents Gallery in Kaimuki, would no doubt agree. In 2001, Ross thought her life was set. She was an elementary school teacher and owned her own deli. Then, on a fateful fall afternoon on the H-3 freeway, she got into an accident while driving home. "Somebody rammed into me, and I got really injured, " she recalls. "I didn't break any bones, but there was a lot of soft tissue damage. Then I started losing feeling in my right hand, and that got me scared." As part of her healing process, Ross took up stained glass as a hobby. "It was relaxing, fun and very therapeutic, " she says. "I had always loved art, although I never had formal art training. I just liked stained glass it's the most `fun' functional art I can think of - and when I like something, I like to share it." Ross discovered she had a natural gift for creating exquisite stained glass works, from Hawaiiana and tropical motifs to more contemporary designs. People began asking her to teach them the craft. In April 2003, she opened Venus Art and hepsera.

In normal humanx or mousez erythrocytes. However, CLT prevent dehydration of SS erythrocytes in vitro, % and oral administration of CLT to patients with sickle cell diseasez7 and to transgenic Hb S-Antilles and Hb D Punjab [SAD] ; micez5 not only blocked the Gardos channel, but also increased cation content and reduced cell density. These data indicate a prominent role for the Caz' activated K' channel in promoting erythrocyte dehydration in vivo in human sickle and mouse SAD erythrocytes. Our objective in this study was to determine whether blockade of the Gardos channel by oral administration of CLT might increase cation content in the B thal mouse. Such an outcome would suggest an in vivo role of the Gardos pathway in dehydration of p thal erythrocytes and would justify a test of the role of cell dehydration in the reduced erythrocyte survival and the consequent anemia in this mouse model. Because combination therapy is an attractive possibility both for sickle cell disease and 0 thal, we also investigated whether combining CLT with r-HuEPO and HU, two agents known to be therapeutically effective in the thal mouse, could lead to incremental improvement in the anemia and herceptin. 849 DEPENDENCY OF THE FORCE-VELOCITY RELATIONSHIPS ON Mg ATP IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSCLE FIBERS FROM XENOPUS LAEVIS.
